| Charles Greene's home and studio, built in 1902 for just over $2,000, was one of the first to establish the firm's signature vision. |
Known for propagating a new style of architecture based on the California environment, architect brothers Charles and Henry Greene built a total of 108 houses during their brief time as the city of Pasadena's most notable architects. Most of their houses were built in Southern California, and feature signature details such as broad roofs, protruding rafters, and ample courtyards. Today, only 61 of these houses remain in existence, and are greatly appreciated for their visionary architectural details. The chart below tracks the brother' progress, from their firm's initially moderate projects through increasingly complex and expensive designs for wealthy clients like lumber baron Robert Blacker and Procter & Gamble co-founder David Gamble.
